Project Goals and Objectives

This project aims to contribute to the improvement of the management effectiveness of the MPAs in the Philippines through institutionalizing a competitive incentive system that fosters development and adaptive management. Specifically, it aims to: 1. recognize and provide competitive incentive to well-managed MPAs in the Philippines; 2. determine the development imperatives of the MPAs in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao and provide links to potential service provider to address these imperatives; 3. Enhance the capacities of the MPAs in MPA management and accessing resources for development of project proposals by linking with potential partners.

Outputs and Outcomes

Awards and recognitions were given to top three winners, which were chosen based on 1. management effectiveness, 2. biophysical and ecological impacts, and 3. social and economic benefits of the MPA. The most outstanding MPA of 2011 was Bangan Marine Sanctuary (Zamboanga Sibugay), which received PhP 100,000, followed by Bangrin Mangrove Marine Protected Area (Pangasinan; PhP 50,000) and Twin Rocks Marine Sanctuary (Batangas) and Tambunan Marine Protected Area (Zamboanga del Sur), which shared the third place (receiving PhP 35,000 each). 117 nominations representing 17 provinces were considered.
